Crystal Castles x Replicade Development Journal

Crystal Castles x Replicade Development Journal

One of our favorite milestones in any RepliCade project is the arrival of the Final Engineering Prototype, or FEP. This is the point where the product has come together and we review every aspect of the machine before committing to production tooling.

The latest Crystal Castles samples recently arrived, and we immediately got to work evaluating every aspect of the machines. Overall, we’re excited by how far the project has come.

Visually, the machines are really starting to capture the personality of the original arcade cabinet. The cabinet artwork is crisp, the illuminated marquees and Atari logos look fantastic, and the mirrored marquee adds a subtle touch that helps recreate the look of the original machine. We’re especially excited about the Prototype Overhaul edition, which includes a removable overlay that reveals the earlier woodgrain field test cabinet underneath. We love details like this because they tell the story behind the game. It’s a small feature, but it gives collectors a glimpse into Crystal Castles’ evolution before it became the colorful arcade classic most people remember.

Of course, appearance is only half the story. Crystal Castles is a unique game because nearly the entire experience revolves around the trackball, so we spent a lot of time evaluating both the integrated controls and our wireless Real Arcade Trak-ball Stick. Overall, we’re very happy with how both are performing. The gameplay feels responsive, Bentley Bear moves naturally around the castles, and the larger Trak-ball controller really captures much of the feel of the original arcade experience. We also identified one improvement we’d like to make before production – increasing the brightness of the larger illuminated Trak-ball so it has more of the visual presence of the original machine.

As expected, the review also gave us a chance to identify the final items we’d like to address before approving the design for tooling. The tinted monitor lens captured the look of the original cabinet, but proved a little darker than we’d like. The integrated mini Trak-Ball is performing well, but we’ll address a small light leak around the Trak-Ball opening to further improve the finished appearance. None of these are major redesigns – they’re exactly the kind of refinements we expect to make at this stage.

Compromises are sometimes part of our development journey with these mini recreations. In this case, the 3.5" display we have used in previous RepliCades is no longer readily available, requiring us to redesign the cabinet around a slightly larger display. The result is a cabinet that’s slightly wider than perfect 1:6 scale, but it also gives us the opportunity to increase the visible playfield, enlarge the marquee slightly, and make Crystal Castles more enjoyable to play on the Replicade without sacrificing the character of the original machine. It’s a good reminder that preserving the original experience sometimes means balancing perfect dimensional accuracy against playability and the realities of modern component sourcing.

We’re now incorporating the feedback from this review and moving toward tooling.

Our current target schedule is:

* Final revisions and tooling start – July
* Tooling completion and pilot production – August
* Mass production – September
* Goods arrive at NWT HQ – October
* Presale shipments begin – November

We’re excited to move into the final stages of development and can’t wait to get these machines into collectors’ hands.
